The Division of Fire Safety’s Training Unit develops and oversees the training curriculum being provided regionally for state certified fire fighters, fire investigators, fire inspectors, fire officers, fire service instructors, as well as emergency responders dealing with hazardous materials. Although certification is not mandatory in the State of Missouri, the Division of Fire Safety has issued 51,000 certifications at various levels to over 21,000 individuals.

Internationally Accredited:

In April of 1996, the Division received accreditation for our certification programs from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). IFSAC is a peer-driven, self-governing system of both fire service certification programs and higher education degree programs. Accreditation is accomplished through the review of certification programs of member entities to ensure they meet recognized professional qualifications standards in their administration of skills and knowledge exams. Because of this accreditation, Missouri shares certification reciprocity with many states and countries, as well as the United States Department of Defense.

Currently, the Division of Fire Safety is accredited at the levels of Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, Fire Service Instructor I and II, and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.

Visit the IFSAC website to learn more about accreditation at www.ifsac.org/faqs

P.O.S.T. Accredited:

The Division of Fire Safety is an approved provider of law enforcement training as recognized by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (POST). This status allows law enforcement officers to receive continuing education credits when attending Division training.

The Division offers POST ceus for officers attending the Fire Cause Determination, Fire Investigator, Bomb Threat Management, Clandestine Drug Lab, and Hazardous Materials classes.

Cost-Free Training

As funding is appropriated the Missouri Division of Fire Safety contracts with several agencies each year to provide a variety of cost-free training programs to emergency service personnel throughout the state. For a list of agencies providing cost free training, contact the Division of Fire Safety.  The largest contract is with the Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute at the University of Missouri. This funding allows the Institute to provide over 300 courses annually to more than 5,000 participants. For a listing of all courses offered through the Institute you may contact them at 1-800-869-3476 or at www.mufrti.org.
