The Division of Fire Safety’s Training Unit develops and oversees the training curriculum being provided regionally for state certified fire fighters, fire investigators, fire inspectors, fire officers, fire service instructors, as well as emergency responders dealing with hazardous materials. Although certification is not mandatory in the State of Missouri, the Division of Fire Safety has issued 65,000 certifications at various levels to over 26,000 individuals.

Internationally Accredited:

In April of 1996, the Division received accreditation for our certification programs from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). IFSAC is a peer-driven, self-governing system of both fire service certification programs and higher education degree programs. Accreditation is accomplished through the review of certification programs of member entities to ensure they meet recognized professional qualifications standards in their administration of skills and knowledge exams. Because of this accreditation, Missouri shares certification reciprocity with many states and countries, as well as the United States Department of Defense.

Currently, the Division of Fire Safety is accredited at the levels of Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, Fire Service Instructor I and II, and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.

Visit the IFSAC website to learn more about accreditation at www.ifsac.org/faqs

P.O.S.T. Accredited:

The Division of Fire Safety is an approved provider of law enforcement training as recognized by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (POST). This status allows law enforcement officers to receive continuing education credits when attending Division training.

The Division offers POST ceus for officers attending the Fire Cause Determination, Fire Investigator, Bomb Threat Management, Clandestine Drug Lab, and Hazardous Materials classes.

Cost-Free Training

Effective July 1, 2011, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety issued contracts to the following training partners to deliver cost-free training to Missouri’s Fire Service and First Responders. The Missouri Division of Fire Safety was appropriated $180,000 from the Division’s Fireworks Licensing Program to contract for statewide contracted training in Fiscal Year 2012. All contracted courses have to meet specific criteria for delivery as set forth by the Fire Safety Advisory Board and the Fire Education Commission and are available to any and all fire fighters throughout the state at no cost. The Fire Safety Advisory Board and Fire Education Commission awarded contracts after an extensive review of all proposals and presentations from each of the training partners. Members of the Fire Service should contact the vendors directly for information regarding course delivery. You may contact Kim Becker or Sherry Hoelscher at 573-751-2930 if you have questions specific to the Division of Fire Safety.
