Realizing the devastating effects of fire and arson, along with the need for a comprehensive training program for individuals committed to determining fire cause, the Division of Fire Safety developed the original Fire Investigator course and certification program in 1986. The current course, which is based on the NFPA 1033 standard was designed to provide those individuals who desire a knowledge of  fire investigation, with various opportunities to combine experience with training obtained during the course.  The course will assist the student with completing the relevant classroom exercises and practical skills, as well as, prepare the individual to take the state Fire Investigator Certification Examination.

This 40-hour course is offered three times yearly or as resources permit. Topics discussed include Accidental and Incendiary Fire Causes, Juvenile Firesetting, Legal Aspects, Interview and Interrogation, and many more. Successful completion of the course and practical skill exam is required for eligibility to take the Division’s Fire Investigator certification examination. The requirements for Fire Investigator I certification are based on NFPA 1033-2003.

Currently certified investigators may attend selected portions of the course in order to obtain re-certification credit hours. Contact the Division for more information on recertification course attendance.

As an approved provider of POST, the Division has formatted this course to meet in-service continuing education hours for law enforcement representatives.

Fire Investigator Certification Exam:

The written exam for this level consists of 100 multiple-choice questions referenced to the NFPA 1033-2003 standard, and the Division of Fire Safety’s Investigator curriculum. Preparation for the exam should include a review of Fire Behavior, Building Construction, and Hazardous Materials Awareness curriculum. Students have two hours to complete the written exam. The practical skill exam is to be completed during the Fire Investigator Course.

Fire Investigator certification is internationally accredited by IFSAC.
