Striving to meet the needs and requirements of the Missouri Fire Service, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety was requested to review an additional Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations course for consideration as an approved course for state certification. After months of review and cross referencing the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition to the NFPA 472 Standard of Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents 2008 Edition, it has been determined that the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition curriculum meets the Division of Fire Safety's highest standards for a course to qualify for certification requirements. Therefore, the Division of Fire Safety is pleased to announce the approval of the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition curriculum for Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations State Certification. This Hazardous Materials course is designed to be delivered in conjunction with a Fire Fighter I & II course using the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition manual. The division feels this is an excellent opportunity for Fire Fighters throughout the state since the IFSTA Essential of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition curriculum provides core knowledge and competencies required for hazardous materials response. Although the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition chapters 22 and 23 pertain to Hazardous Materials, other required knowledge and skills to successfully complete hazardous materials certification is contained within other chapters. For a complete reading assignment of the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition related to hazardous materials training, contact the Division of Fire Safety's Training and Certification Unit at 573-522-2426. To ease any potential concerns, the Division of Fire Safety's written test banks reference both the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition curriculum and Univeristy of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute's hazardous material courses. The answers to all questions are contained in both courses. Students must complete and pass the course practical skills evaluation component administered by a DFS approved evaluator immediately at the conclusion of the course in order to be considered for state certification through the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. The course instructor CAN NOT serve as a practical skills evaluator for the course they delivered. Registration for course delivery of the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations 5th Edition can ONLY be obtained through the Division of Fire Safety's Training and Certification Unit at 573-522-2426.
